The place
The Parish of Our Lady of Peace in Marmolejo has a history dating back to the 14th century, when it was known as the Parish of Santiago de Marmolejo. The current structure of the church was built in two phases: first, the central nave, influenced by the Gothic style and dating from around 1588, was erected, followed by the addition of the transept and Baroque dome, which were completed around 1613. The main façade and tower were added between the 18th and 19th centuries.
More information
During the Spanish Civil War, the interior of the church was dismantled and transformed into a market square. After the war, restoration and reconstruction work was carried out, and in 1949, an 18th-century Baroque altarpiece from a Dominican convent in Zamora was installed.
In 2004, a complete restoration of the church's interior and ceilings was completed, including a new artistic repainting of the interior. These restoration efforts have not only preserved the rich history and architecture of the Parish of Our Lady of Peace, but have also ensured its continued existence as an important place of worship and cultural heritage in Marmolejo.
